Review:
Paperboy (2012) *** (4) Lee Daniels adaptation of the novel by Peter Dexter takes a look at some of the garbage swamps and mystery around them. Reporter Ward Jansen (Matthew McConaughey) returns to his hometown to try and solve the mystery behind the dead sheriff. Hillary Van Wetter (John Cusack) has been sentenced to death for a crime, but journalists believe that he is innocent and dragged his brother (Zac Efron) and trash wife (Nicole Kidman) to it. Newsy is a pretty entertaining view of a group of characters that you can not help but hate and funny to see McConaughey completely change your image here, as in previous years KILLER JOE. I think the best thing about the picture is that the authentic feel of the show and director Daniels brings to the picture. The biggest problem is the script and the story that I just felt it was not all that amazing. The whole mystery surrounding what actually happened to the sheriff seems to take a back seat and it really just seems to come and go from time to time. Im not really know why he was thrown into the background even especially with twists that come to an end. With twists you'd think the filmmakers who wanted the story itself to be important, but it never took off. It also seems that the director wanted to surprise the audience with some, and graphic violence and sexual situations, the stars are all doing some pretty wild things. It really seems as if the film just build each scene, and its fair to say that they are pretty impressive. Performances by the entire cast is superb with both McConaughey and Kidman do wonders with their characters swamp trash. I think both are very reliable and hats for them to go as far out as they did. I was also impressed by Efron and I think it handles pretty good character development. Cusack's nice to play creepy bad guys, and we also received strong support from David Oyelowo, Scott Glenn, and Macy Gray. The cinematography is also good as a result of the music and the atmosphere. Newsy, as well, is a good deal for the star, but you can not help but feel it's a missed opportunity as a strong story will make it better.
